When in doubt, go back to what works.

I write, I recycle, I remake, I reduce.

After getting back from Japan, I expected my life to keep moving, despite the fact that it didn't move much in Japan due to my efforts at crystallizing myself and my life. I thought the momentum of hurtling at several hundred miles an hour on a plane would carry me further in Chicago than it has. But when my feet hit the ground, I was foreign and lost.

American was a country I did not, do not, fully understand anymore.
I am too quiet, too deeply rooted within myself for this country.
I give people the privacy Japan has instilled me to automatically offer by not noticing or looking at them. This is a dangerous behavior in an attitude-based society, especially when so much of my previous Chicago defense was based on the fact that I exuded confidence.
My speech patterns were stilted and damaged from having little practice at daily conversation. My frustration at no longer remembering the public transportation system and not having a bicycle was intense. The expression of this frustration was also stilted and damaged, which people found frustrating in turn.

I am too quiet for this country.

I'd like to take a moment on my regular and poorly-updated journal to write a little about this whole shooting thing, and Cho Seung-Hui himself.
Not the victims, not the location, and definitely not the speculations people have made about the incompetence of the school. People will point fingers and then people will sue, hoping to pad their childrens' lives or grief with money.

Read this article first. Pay careful attention to the last three lines.

Times are changing. People are meaner, there are fewer social boundaries to uphold personal behavior. There are relatively no expected behavior protocols being taught to children. They don't get taught to act polite, they aren't slapped when they mouth off, and they walk around with a sense of entitlement that begs the question of when the last time they heard the word "No" was. The code of conduct has been shattered, then abandoned.

There are fewer consequences for poor behavior and less attention is being paid to the emotional damage being done amongst academic peers. I stress the part about consequences especially, because when there are no negatives to destroying someone's life, to victimizing someone, it seems like an open invitation to do so. Carrying that sense of entitlement with them into higher academia, people seem to think they can treat others poorly, tantrum at them when rules are enforced, pull unbelievable power trips and manipulate the race cards unchecked. Well, if we've learned anything in the course of Bush's reign, it's that an unchecked system always breaks down.

This is a wake up call. This isn't the first, and this won't be the last of them either. In my opinion, it's a damn fine one. We live in a country where gun ownership is treated as an expectation, and yet people still walk around over the age of 5 throwing fits, destroying reputations, bullying, harassing, and emotionally abusing others.

I've read several message boards about it and watched as the people who tried to rationalize the bigger picture get flamed for it. They say things like "Maybe this needed to happen. Maybe this will make the next cruel-hearted twit think twice about trying to get a rise out of the quiet kid next door. Maybe this will wake people up finally."

Maybe? No, this had to happen. This has to happen again and again, until those "maybe"s become "definite"s. This has to continue happening until people come to realize that a code of conduct that instructs you to be polite to people isn't some fascist 1950's suggestion to make society dull, it's a guide to your survival amongst your peers. If you treat people politely, no one will have a reason to shoot you. If you treat people respectfully, you will survive elementary school/high school/college.
Does this make sense? If you live in a society where dangerous weapons are easily obtainable, you don't go around purposely pushing peoples' buttons. YOU DON'T POKE THE BEAR.

Considering that most people who set out to victimize others know very little about their intended victims, it's like playing a sick game of Russian Roulette every time they do it. Slap the books out of some skinny guy's hands? Click. Tell an overweight kid they're a disgusting fat pig? Click. Ostracize some girl from a social group? Click. Pick on some Korean exchange student? Bang.

So we're going to be a little more wary of South Korean kids now, maybe of all Asians, because it's hard to tell their ethnic origin from just looking at them. So what about the others? White boys in black trench coats seem to be a bad gamble when it comes to harassment, thanks to Columbine and several repeat performances in California, and New Jersey. And most African-Americans are off-limits because they travel in groups, and probably are or know gangsters who will shoot you. But everyone else is fair game, right? Will it take some Mexican kid walking up with an arsenal and taking out a baker's dozen of her classmates to leave them alone? How about some fat boy blowing up the school gymnasium during a P.E. period, would that get people to reconsider the daily harassment? It seems to be the case. It seems like humans only learn one way, and that's the hardest, most painful way.

You wouldn't walk up to a stranger in the street and start trash talking them, so why would you do the same to someone you only see at school? We've learned that strangers can be dangerous because heaven knows who's walking around these days, but have you considered who those strangers grow up from? Kids. Kids you go to school with, kids you graduate with.

So the next you decide to treat someone else badly because you had a bad day, dislike them for some reason, think they're an easy target, or just because you're bored, ask yourself this.
Will this one be the one to snap and shoot you for it?
I'd like to close this with a quote from the article about Cho Seung-Hui.

Don't be the person who leaves another with no option but to start shooting to make the misery stop.

What a strange spring it is turning out to be.
There's always someone's love life in peril or in shambles, more often than not my own.
There's the wonders of foreign countries open to me suddenly, though I lack a partner in crime to properly explore them.

How strange, that things so muchly assured could go so wrong and things so vague could turn out to be the only solid evidence.
Do I care anymore?
Is there still a voice to protest?

And the weather, naturally sucks.

I need your help in solving this, and quickly! It's for a prize that will benefit all mankind!
Or maybe just my character in a game. But...it's math and just looking at it makes my head hurt.

The Question:
Today is the day you have been waiting for! The new game system you have been wanting for months is finally released, and you are ready to go buy it! Hopping in your lovely 2005 Solara, ( And stopping to pay the ridiculous $2.50 for gas ), you drive to Gamez R Us, your favorite video game store. Securing your wonderful car, you walk in to pick up your prize.

The game system you want is $86.00. You cannot afford that! As you are about to leave dejectedly, you notice your friend…who looks like they are having the same dilemma. You decide to split the price 50/50, and share the system. As you are about to go pay for it, you notice a sign announcing that for today only, all video game merchandise is 15% off ( This, it also says, will be calculated before sales tax is ). Getting excited, both you and your friend grab the $30 “Dance Dance or Die” game from the shelf and proceed to the cashier, both of you deciding to split the total charge you end up with and share. After paying ( including the ridiculously high 10% ending charge sales tax ), you and your friend hop back in your Solara, deciding to rent a movie and watch it together before breaking in your beautiful purchase.

Stopping at HollywoodBuster, you run in, both of you deciding you will pay for the snacks if your friend pays for the videos. While you look at the munchies, your friend comes back with half a dozen video boxes. As you stare in awe, they explain that while one video was $2.99 to rent normally, renting three together got a total charge of only $8.00! Shaking your head, you go back to the yummy treats and pick out three bags of Doritos, each $1.50, two boxes of popcorn for $1.99 each, and two sodas for $.99 a can. At the register, you are pleased to learn that the bags of Doritos are on special today, only $1 a bag. Paying for the entire lot together with your friend, the cashier explains that the food and the videos have a different sales tax, the first for 3% and the latter for 5%. Glancing at one another, your friend goes and grabs another soda and adds it to your own pile, smiling innocently at you. You retaliate by taking your pile and going to another cashier before they can add anything else. You pay and drive home. Once inside, as your friend starts up the movie, you decide to figure out just how much you have spent. You are very responsible! So…how much DID you spend today?

It's relatively simple to avoid getting hit in earnest by me. Stop when I say "no" or "stop it". Barring that, try stopping when I say "no" or "stop it" for the fifth time.

I realize it's always my fault.
But it would help the situation if you stopped touching me/doing whatever to me that makes me uncomfortable enough to eventually hit you.
But we can just keep putting the dog to sleep after getting bitten for poking it with a stick repeatedly if you like.

We've had some laughs, shared some tears, argued some points, and burnt a few bridges in this journal, haven't we? My rants are well known to my friends, second only in brevity and intensity to Kevin's own. They've been about an array of topics, generally psychology, societal structure, politics. Most have been serious, a few comical. From a basis such as this, who would have thought my first published book could turn out to be an Aesop's Fable-style children's book?

I recently wrote a children's book as a sort of apology to myself for being too much of a spazz to complete my NANOWRIMO quest. I even made artwork for it that was in a gentle minimalist style I've never experimented in before, using whitespace to say what color couldn't. I didn't think much of it, though the story was very personal to me. But now a local company is considering publishing my book has part of their international fairytales series.

The strangest part is, I didn't think of it as much of a children's story when I first wrote it. The premise was dreamed up after a calming and pleasant talk with Teena, a northern Indian woman on JET with me. She had the feeling of still, purified water about her, the way I imagine an ancient Hewbrew mikvah would, carved into the winter cellar of a house older than generations can number.

Weird, huh?

Happy Feet was too bizarre to be believed. Penguins, religion, big CGI Arctic beasts, singing, dancing, holy hell who let the company executive's angsting New Age chakra-licking daughter direct this one? Go see it though. It's an experience. If at all possible, go see it slightly drunk. You'll be less disturbed with a cocktail or two in you first.

Children of Men - I remember this same premise from an old "The Outer Limits" show. Women were no longer able to have (healthy) children, the world was thrown into chaos, the military controlled everything and housed pregnant women in a medical facility to deliver and destroy the mutant ones.
This movie, not quite the same thing but close enough to make you wonder if it is a prequel to the "Outer Limit" segment, for the following reasons. Sullen male lead becomes quick-witted hero and risks all? Check. Cheeky black female lead is the key to mankind's survival? Check. Military-controlled world and oppressive government? Check, by golly.
The points where Children of Men and the old scifi thriller TV show diverge is that Children of Men goes much deeper into the watcher's psyche with vivid scenes of heroism, self-sacrifice, despotism, oppression, violence, and terrorism. It reaches out for that essential element of human emotion, sympathy, and squeezes for all its worth. But the movie can only work out as anything but a fragmented warzone flick if you can set aside logic and current convention and imagine what if...
And if you're not obsessive about cinematic closure.

Both are not to be missed, and I recommend you see Children of Man with a friend or loved one you don't mind being soppy with.

Much sympathy unto you, for I just enjoyed a balmy late autumn day.
I really do miss snow though.
Actually, thanks to the bizzare weather patterns that are now slamming the Midwest with snowpiles, Fukuoka is experiencing the warmest "winter" in more than a decade, possibly more than a half century. The jury's still out on that. The nights have dipped to the mid 30's and low 40's, but the daytime weather is still light jacket weather and beautiful.
Meanwhile, the Phillipines is getting sand-sacked by typhoon after typhoon, many of which are big enough to cause fatal conditions and flood.

WTF is wrong with the weather system? Seriously, who piddled into the holy water and pissed off God?

About time. I cannot for the life of me understand why black society and media supported this word for so long. I'm not sure whether I should be amused or ashamed that it took Michael Richards' outburst to prompt this, but aside from dissuading him from a comedy career, some good may yet come out of that situation.

People call one another negative things to desensitize themselves and others to words that could otherwise hurt them, which falls into the whole "taking it back" idea. By taking back and internalizing words that otherwise injure, you remove the negative pathos attached to them. But by using them, whether for good or bad, you are still interjecting them into common societal usage. The whole methodology of the black culture's use of "nigga"/"nigger" smacks of the old hypocritically parental "do as I say, not as I do" mentality. Which as anyone over the age of four with parents can tell you, is some class A bullshit. Leading by example is the best way to have any kind of basis for being pissed by incorrect actions.

If blacks really wanted the word "nigga"/"nigger" to not be used by whites anymore, which I think is the real issue here, they should probably reconsider calling one another that word on a daily basis and in their popular media. - "quote originator name withheld by request"

I am still and forever racist against stupidity, but not much else. The color of your skin does not qualify or disqualify you from being included in the race of "stupid."

Bought a shiny new Ipod.
Itunes 7.02, the only version of Itunes it will accept, refuses to download to my computer.
Ipod is rendered into $250 paperweight.
Apple technology fails me again.

I shudder to consider what would happen if I were to buy a Mac. I'm picturing anti-matter meeting matter with a universe 'splody ending.

I NEED an external hard drive. Over 100gig is better. Now. If you know of any reasonably priced ones, let me know please.
